Understanding the Role of an MP in Bermuda’s 2025 General Election

Fellow Bermudians,

Bermuda is in the enviable position of selecting from 110 candidates in the 2025 General Election. While discussions focus on candidates and party politics, it is essential first to understand the role of a Member of Parliament (MP) in our Westminster system.

MPs serve as representatives of their

constituents and lawmakers. Bermuda has 36 MPs, each representing between 1,200 and 1,300 voters. The Boundaries Commission ensures fairness by maintaining equal voter distribution as closely as possible under the one man, one vote, each vote of equal value principle.  Bermuda’s first genuine experience of this principle occurred under the Progressive Labour Party in the 2003 General Election.

Following an election, one MP is chosen as Speaker of the House, ensuring neutrality

in parliamentary debates. MPs are expected to be physically present in the House of

Assembly (HOA), to debate bills, propose amendments, and vote on policies that impact Bermuda. They also hold the government accountable by questioning ministers, debating policies, and serving on committees that scrutinize legislation and

government actions.

As of February 2025, all MPs belong to either the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) or

the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA). Each party operates a Caucus, where internal,

confidential discussions influence decisions made in the HOA.  Beyond Parliament,

MPs assist constituents by navigating government services, advocating for projects,

and addressing community concerns.

As we approach the election, voters must carefully assess candidates’ experience,

integrity, and community service. If we put the Parliamentary horse before the cart,

we will elect MPs who truly serve Bermuda’s best interests.

An informed electorate ensures a stronger democracy.
