Fellow Bermudians,
The cost-of-living crisis is more than a
challenge—it’s a matter of fairness and shared responsibility. No one in Bermuda should have to struggle to make ends meet while companies report record profits.
Let’s make it make sense! The PLP recognizes that the high cost of living isn’t unique to Bermuda; it is a global problem.
In Bermuda, the PLP are determined to take action. While some may prioritize other concerns, your PLP government has focused on supporting Bermudians through these tough times.
Our record demonstrates an investment in Bermuda residents:
• During COVID, when many people found themselves out of work, we
created the Unemployment Benefit, providing critical financial relief that
helped thousands of families meet their needs. I know from experience
how the benefit benefitted many of our young people.
• When insurance costs threatened to rise, we acted decisively to freeze the
government portion of health insurance fees for three years, saving
families hundreds of dollars annually.
These actions were driven by a commitment to invest in the well-being of all
Bermuda residents. We understood the urgency of the moment and made decisions
to ease the burden where it mattered most.
We’ve also taken steps to reduce everyday costs for families:
• Slashing duty on essential food items.
• Freezing gas prices at the pumps whether you ride a bike or drive a car.
• Reducing energy taxes by 60%, to keep BELCO bills from being higher
than they are.
• Maintaining a freeze on health insurance costs to protect household
budgets.
These measures didn’t happen by chance. They were the result of deliberate
decisions to support Bermudians and make life a little easier during difficult times.
Again, The PLP believes in investing in all Bermudians.
While we are proud of the progress we have made, we know there is still more to do.
The cost-of-living crisis continues to affect many in our community, and we remain
committed to finding solutions.
In the coming days, we will share new initiatives designed to tackle these challenges
head-on. Together, we can ensure Bermuda is a place of opportunity, equity, and
security for all.
Thank you, Bermuda for your resilience. Let’s make it make sense - Let’s continue
working towards a fairer Bermuda—together.
