WHY DO I SUPPORT PLP?

Good morning Bermuda,
Continuing my theme from yesterday, Your vote is your voice.
One question I am asked about politics is why I support the PLP rather than any other party, given my professional background does not reflect the
typical PLP profile. My first response is that my professional background is not who I am – it is just that, a designation. I then summarize my response by explaining that Bermuda comprises of people and companies. Whilst both are needed for success, it is not a 50/50 relationship. One has to take precedence and for the PLP, people take precedence! The list below provides recent evidence of the PLP’s investment in Bermuda’s people in 2024:
Introduced Bermuda’s first minimum wage at $16.40
Increased the amount and eligibility for the Child Daycare Allowance
Reduced payroll taxes for 88% of workers and all local businesses
Changed labour laws to increase protection for workers – for example increased the maximum amount paid for redundancy
Continued to invest in affordable housing
Gave seniors a cost of living pension increase
Increased maternity leave for mothers and established legal rights to paternity leave for fathers.
We also have a good idea of what will come with the next budget since we already
saw the pre budget report. Here is a sample of what we should expect:
Reduced customs duties on building materials to reduce the cost of building
and renovating homes.
Lowering private car licensing fees by 10%., for all classes of cars
Removing customs duties on motor vehicle parts and tyres – therefore car
repairs should be less expensive – an immediate impact for everyone returning home
Increasing the personal duty-free allowance for returning residents from $200 to $300.
Reducing the monthly tax on mobile phones by 50%.
Lowering the base rate of land tax for residential properties by 50%.
